[HanCinema's Film Review] "Lucid Dream"

Dae-ho (played by Ko Soo) is a reporter with legal troubles who struggles to make time for family. Then, one day at the amusement park, Dae-ho loses something very precious to him and is haunted by nightmares, slowly being driven mad. That is, until he learns about neurology researcher So-hyeon (played by Kang Hye-jeong), who is working to unlock the power of the "Lucid Dream" to reconstruct in fuller detail the mysteries of the subconscious.

With such a cool concept it's a bit of a shame that the actual plot of "Lucid Dream" is just a standard investigative thriller. A good investigative thriller, admittedly, as writer/director Kim Joon-seong-I has just the bare minimum number of twists and turns to keep us guessing as to the ever elusive identity of the true antagonist. It was admittedly a little silly how dubious medical practices are more of a plot point than Dae-ho's backstory, which barely gets used even as a red herring.

But as to the good stuff, "Lucid Dream" looks great. The film's climactic setpiece is beautifully set among the crumbling black-and-white dreamscape of the Digital Media City in Seoul. The atmosphere is oddly fearful and unnerving, and well symbolizes the general collapse in psyche of the three persons who ultimately meet there. It's the ultimate spookiness- trapped inside a dying mind, feeling ever conscious of the destruction of self, the hopelessness of it all, the sheer desperation.

So yep, a nice metaphor. And it's actually quite well built up to throughout the story. If writer/director Kim Joon-seong-I doesn't seem to show much interest in the possibilities of the dream world, it's because Dae-ho doesn't care. Remember, Dae-ho only wants to go into dreams to resolve the nightmare of his daily reality. We can feel this tension in all of the dream sequences. There's always this sense that Dae-ho feels as out of control there as in the real world. Consequently, Dae-ho wants to escape dreams as badly as he wants to escape reality. In both locations his sense of self is intolerable.

The contrast is well marked with Yong-hyeon (played by Park Yoo-chun), a mysterious man of the dream world who seems to have all the answers yet Yong-hyeon's powers are illusory. He is master of the dream world precisely because he is powerless in the real one. If Yong-hyeon at times seems magical in scope, and a better hero than Dae-ho can ever hope to be, it's important to realize that Dae-ho, with his actual joyful real life talisman, very much does not want to become Yong-hyeon.

Of course as is often the case with metaphysical stories it's very easy to read an amount of depth into "Lucid Dream" that may well not actually exist. So to put this movie into simpler teams, the "Lucid Dream" concept? Cool. The story? Above average. Special effects. Excellent, and frequently subtle. The emotional kicker at the end? Actually pretty good considering what an archetypal character Dae-ho. So this is an easy recommendation for me.

[TRANS] 170309 Go Soo mentions Park Yuchun in Arena HOMME+ magazine

For your movie this time, you are together with an esteemed actor, Sol Kyung-gu, and a talented actor in different fields, Park Yuchun. Are there special points to being together with actors who are different in temperaments?
[…] Yuchunnie also is an extremely charming actor. He showed different energy with me, with Sol Kyung-gu sunbae-nim, and with Hye-jungie. So it was a very interesting work.

[TRANS] 170228 ‘Lucid Dream’ review – This Man

The part of the supporting role of This Man/Park Yuchun

Appearing as a mysterious man early in the movie, he is This Man. The doubts [about him] crumple with Dr. So-hyun’s kind explanation. Meeting in a department store going after Chairman Cho Myung-chul, there is an encounter with This Man within a dream. The movie starts to come alive with the ingenious This Man [aka] Kwon Yong-hyun’s presence and character like you’ve never seen before. Contrary to a ‘maniac-fan’ shown in existing movies, he is a character of a ‘maniac-fan’ who talks a lot but his abilities are obvious, for one; and even though he cannot use his two legs, he can certainly take care of himself, for another. He brings life into the film with his fresh presence. The shared-dreaming attempted by him, as expected, makes you sense a taste of following into a ‘dreamland’ for the first time, as much as This Man’s appearance early on.

[INTERVIEW] 170226 Go Soo “Park Yuchun did well as This Man…Wasn’t his acting good?”

Actor Go Soo praised Park Yuchun’s acting.
Toward reporters’ buzz over movie ‘Lucid Dream’, Go Soo disclosed his thoughts in an interview conducted at one of the cafes in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul recently: “In the movie, it might not be easy for audiences to accept This Man’s presence”.
About this, Go Soo added, “This Man is an important hidden character. He appears as a person who’s able to freely come into and go from dreams but I learned he is actually a presence named This Man. I hear he is some kind of presence who generally shows up in people’s dreams”.

Also Go Soo was unsparing with his praises, saying: “I had the notion that This Man is an attractive character and wondered who would play him,” and, “I wanted to get along well, to match, and to work well with Park Yuchun. I wondered how I could express it. I even saw ‘Sea Fog’ which Park Yuchun-ssi acted in,” and, “Wasn’t his acting really good?”.

Netflix Takes Enters into LUCID DREAM; 2nd Korean Acquisition for Online Streaming Giant

Current sci-fi thriller Lucid Dream has become only the second Korean film to enter into a distribution contract with online streaming giant Netflix. The film, which debuted in Korean theaters on February 23rd, will be exclusively offered in Netflix’s 190 global markets.

KO Soo leads the cast as a man crushed in the wake of his son’s disappearance. Three years later, he is led towards a new investigation technique called ‘lucid dreaming’ through which he hopes to find a clue to his son’s whereabouts.

Beyond KO, whose major credits include The Front Line (2011), Lucid Dream features veteran star SUL Kyung-gu of A Peppermint Candy (2000) and the Public Enemy series as well as K-pop star PARK Yoo-chun, who debuted on screen in the BONG Joon-ho-produced maritime thriller Haemoo (2014).

Lucid Dream is the featured length directorial debut of KIM Joon-sung, who built his reputation through well-received short films. He is currently working on the script for his next project Seoul, which will take place during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Jessica LEE, the Vice President of communications for Netflix Asia, stated that: “We are looking forward to Lucid Dream becoming a movie that’ll receive great love from audiences all around the world through Netflix.”

The news follows a similar deal for last year’s disaster drama Pandora. Both arrangements were secured by Contents Panda, the international arm of Korean studio Next Entertainment World. Lucid Dream debuted at seventh place at the Korean box office, with 27,000 entries on its opening day.

[NEWS] 170220 The real reasons that ‘Lucid Dream’ tried to conceal Park Yuchun as its hidden card

‘Lucid Dream’ has its reasons for choosing Park Yuchun as its hidden card.
When it came to choosing the “hidden card” in movie ‘Lucid Dream’ (directing by Kim Joon-sung/production by Road Pictures), they decisively were able to choose Park Yuchun and Park In-hwan. ‘Lucid Dream’ is a memory-trace SF thriller movie where Dae-ho(Go Soo) uses lucid dreams to look for his son who was methodically kidnapped 3 years ago, to look for clues hidden in his memories and chases after the criminal.
Commonly appearing in the dreams of many people around the world, it is Park Yuchun who leaves a strong presence with the role of “This Man” in the set-up of shared-dreaming being done. Why did ‘Lucid Dream’ choose Park Yuchun as their hidden card?
This Man acted by Park Yuchun is the mysterious character who suddenly appears in Dae-ho’s lucid dreams. This Man takes off from the scene in haste when he is discovered by Dae-ho inside the dream, and vanishes abruptly at the end of Dae-ho’s chase with him. Dae-ho experiences confusion at the appearance of This Man; and then one day, he happens to come across This Man in the real world. This Man lets Dae-ho know about the existence of shared-dreaming.
‘Lucid Dream’ had its crank-in [T/N: start of filming] on April 6th, 2015. On his casting back then, Park Yuchun swept Newcomer Awards debuting on the big screen with movie ‘Sea Fog’. He won a septuple crown in the (Best) [Male] Newcomer Awards; from the 51st Baeksang Arts Awards’, the 35th Blue Dragon Awards, the 34th Korean Film Critics Association Awards, the 15th Busan Film Critics Association Awards, the 51st Daejong Film Festival Awards, and the 10th MaxMovie Best Film Awards up to the 6th This Year’s Film Awards[/the 6th Korean Film Reporters Association (KOFRA) Film Awards]. Amid there was a lot of interest focused on his next work because of that, Park Yuchun had decided on not starring as a lead in ‘Lucid Dream’, but instead making an appearance as a little character of the special appearance-type.
Director Kim Joon-sung revealed a casting behind-the-scenes story in an interview with Herald POP: “In the case of Park Yuchun, he was sweeping Newcomer Awards with ‘Sea Fog’ at the time of casting. So I didn’t think Park Yuchun would accept since This Man is a small role. But while I was doing the project with Sol Kyung-gu hyung-nim, C-JeS Entertainment CEO Baek Chang-joo recommended Park Yuchun. Naturally I am very thankful to Park Yuchun for making an appearance”.
Continuing Director Kim Joon-sung expressed his satisfaction in Park Yuchun’s casting: “I was searching for a young actor to act as This Man; and naturally seeing that it was the concept not for a lead but a special appearance, I was wondering about who will be able to do it. Meanwhile there was talk of giving the script to Park Yuchun. I found out that he personally likes SF[/science fiction (sci-fi)] genre. Of course I am grateful to him and he was interested in read  the script when he was given it”.
In particular Director Kim Joon-sung attracted attention at disclosing his casting intention in the early stage, saying, “Truthfully I tried to hide Park Yuchun’s appearance. Like how Matt Damon suddenly appeared in ‘Interstellar’ in the middle of it or U-Know Yunho had a cameo in ‘Ode to My Father’, I wanted to hide the fact about ‘Lucid Dream’’s Park Yuchun’s appearance. Fans will like it when they watch if they didn’t know about it. But it shortly became known since Park Yuchun is very popular and highly sought out. I’m glad he is shown in the movie as originally intended”.
Continuing Director Kim Joon-sung praised: “In the case of This Man, he is the person who does shared-dreaming entering into people’s dreams. If you look closer at This Man’s home, there are images where he is wearing different clothes with various hairstyles besides the computer. Whenever you enter into dreams, you can enter changing yourself with the image you wish,” and, “I wanted how This Man would fit long hair in the real world, not in dreams. But it was a hairstyle that had been very Micky Yuchun from his early days and rather looked pretty. It feels like fans would also like it, too. I was afraid it would be awkward, but it worked well. Truthfully there are only a few whose (outer) looks are able to assimilate to all sorts of hairstyles”.
‘Lucid Dream’ with Park Yuchun appearing as its hidden card will open on the 22nd.

[NEWS] 170216 Park Yuchun, two distinct faces as ‘Lucid Dream’ This Man

Movie ‘Lucid Dream’ will be released. The part people are interested in as much as the fresh material on lucid dreaming is actor Park Yuchun’s performance.
Park Yuchun will be appearing as This Man in movie ‘Lucid Dream’. He turns up in the dreams of Dae-ho(Go Soo) –who tries lucid dreams to look for clues about the criminal who kidnapped his son–. But as a mysterious man who appears in Dae-ho’s dreams, he takes off in a hurry and causes Dae-ho to be more confused. Afterwards he comes to face-to-face with Dae-ho in the real world, and as the person who divulges about shared-dreaming, he is the hidden character in the movie.
At Park Yuchun’s return to the big screen, interests in it were gathered since last year. Although Park Yuchun, who is in the middle of serving his military service currently, could not be in attendance at the movie’s official promotions, the interests in his ability and acting have been amassing.
According to Director Kim Joon-sung, there wasn’t additional editing in respect to Park Yuchun. Director Kim said, “This Man is an interesting character who drifts between the dreams of people who are well-informed about lucid dreaming,” and, “Park Yuchun immersed himself well into the role of This Man. I am grateful to him. I didn’t attempt to make additional edits”.
In the movie Park Yuchun demonstrated 100% of his ability as an actor he’s proven up to date. From different visuals in reality and dreams to his acting tone[/style], he completely immersed him in different characters. He expressed a unique character who is close to an eccentric person and doesn’t stand out; and moving freely as he pleases among dreams, he subjectively creates the mysterious character This Man.
Although there is a small amount of him compared to Go Soo, Sol Kyung-gu, and Kang Hye-jung in ‘Lucid Dream’, Park Yuchun unquestionably demonstrated his imperative presence. He will unfold acting worthy of the title of an actor who is paid attention to by Chungmuro.
Now there is only the public’s evaluation left. There is much attention indeed with Park Yuchun as an actor through a more mature acting shown in ‘Lucid Dream’, receiving the public’s interests.
Meanwhile movie ‘Lucid Dream’, including Park Yuchun, stars Go Soo, Sol Kyung-gu, Kang Hye-jung, Park In-hwan, and Chun Ho-jin. It is set to be released on this coming [February] 22nd.

[NEWS] 170218 “Lucid Dream” Director Praises Park Yoochun, Calls Him An “Actor, Not Idol”

Director Kim Joon Sung of “Lucid Dream” sat down recently for an interview about the upcoming film with news outlet Sports Chosun. In the interview, he was full of praise for JYJ’s Park Yoochun, who plays the mysterious man that appears in the dreams of lead character Dae Ho (Go Soo).
Kim Joon Sung first revealed that he had initially intended for Park Yoochun’s role to be just a cameo.
“I thought it was a great honor when Park Yoochun joined ‘Lucid Dream.’ He had high value as an actor after he swept distinguished awards in Korea with ‘Sea Fog.’ The production team and I wanted to give such a Park Yoochun to the audience as a surprise gift. Back then, Kim Soo Hyun and U-Know Yunho‘s surprise cameos in ‘Miss Granny’ and ‘Ode to My Father‘ [respectively] attracted public attention, so we wanted to continue [that kind of] effect. But the casting was revealed too early, so it could not be a surprise gift anymore,” he explained.

He then went on to praise the actor, saying, “I had a general prejudice against idols, but it disappeared because of Park Yoochun. Worrying, his breathing when running, and his gaze, the acting was all that of an actor. He shines clearly as the actor Park Yoochun, instead of the singer Park Yoochun.”
The director continued, “Of course, there was the controversy about his incident before the film release, but I wasn’t worried. The points that Park Yoochun showed in the movie were so good, I had confidence that [the film] would not be affected by the scandal. It’s a pity that he could not attend the [press] preview, but he and I both support each other in our hearts. I hope we can meet again in the future with a good character and a good production.”
“Lucid Dream” opens in Korean theaters on February 22.

Actor Go Soo did an interview for movie ‘Lucid Dream’ and told a backstory about having worked alongside with Park Yuchun, to Herald POP at one of Palpan-dong’s cafe in Seoul on the 16th.
On this day Go Soo said about working alongside with Park Yuchun, “I really like the character This Man. As you know when watching the movie, he is really attractive. It is charming how he can come and go freely from in people’s dreams”.
Following, about attention being on the part whether or not the opening was postponed because of the controversy over Park Yuchun’s private life, Go Soo explained it’s not because of Park Yuchun: “In any case seeing that ‘Lucid Dream’ has a lot of scenes being in dreams, there are so many CG effects needed. To raise its completion in post-production, it came down to the movie’s opening being a little behind. The CG effects are good in term of immersion. It seems the scene where the building was collapsing and expressions were done well”.

Go Soo said about working alongside with Park Yuchun: “I really liked the character ‘This Man’ since looking at the script,” and, “It was fun also working alongside with Park Yuchun-ssi. As you know when watching the movie, isn’t he very attractive”.
Following, at the end on there also being opinions that Park Yuchun’s sex scandal affected the movie opening getting delayed, Go Soo denied it, saying, “As our movie has a lot of scenes being in dreams, there are so many CG in them. It came down to it [the opening] being a little behind because of its [the movie’s] completion in post-production”.

(Yonhap Interview) 'Lucid Dream' Go Soo about Park Yoochun, "It was fun to work with him"

(Yonhap Interview) Actor says film 'Lucid Dream' is all about paternal love

By Shim Sun-ah
SEOUL, Feb. 16 (Yonhap) -- The new Korean film "Lucid Dream" might be reminiscent of the 2010 Hollywood sci-fi movie "Inception" for dealing with dreams but is, at its heart, a story of paternal love, its lead actor Go Soo said Thursday.
"I think this film is easier than 'Inception' and has quite a lot of things to see given its relatively low budget and other conditions," the actor said during an interview at a Seoul cafe with members of the local press, including Yonhap News Agency.
The upcoming film tells the story of a broadcasting reporter named Dae-ho who slips into his own dreams with help from a psychiatrist to find clues to track down the kidnapper of his little boy taken three years ago. It is the debut film of rookie writer-director Kim Joon-sung.
For those unfamiliar with the meaning of the title, "lucid dreaming" is an elusive state in which you consciously know you are dreaming. Unlike a regular dream where there is no control over what you experience, a lucid dream offers you the possibility to control your surroundings.
Whatever the box office result might be, the film would contribute to increasing diversity in the local film industry with its fresh and unique subject matter, the actor said.
But at its heart, "Lucid Dream" is more about a father even risking his life to find his long-lost son, he emphasized.
"This is what the director and I thought was the most important from the beginning. I think this is a story that everyone can empathize with because we're all somebody's child and can become parents someday."

Being a father of two in real life, Go said he was able to easily engross himself in the role.

While the filmmaker was in charge of creating spectacles for the film, Go said his goal was keeping Dae-ho's longing for his lost child intact till the end.
Go said Dae-ho is a tenacious and righteous man with his own philosophy as a reporter specializing in unearthing corruption involving conglomerates. He is also a generous single father who tries to spend as much time as possible with his son, said the actor.

Actor Go Soo poses for the camera in this photo provided by Next Entertainment World on Feb. 16, 2017. (Yonhap)

"I thought such tenacity was the most important element of Dae-ho's personality because he never gives up hope of finding his abducted son," he said.
Singer-actor Park Yu-chun from the popular K-pop boy band JYJ plays an unnamed mysterious man in a black suit who confuses Dae-ho by abruptly appearing in his lucid dreams and later in the real world. Encountered in the real world, the man lets the protagonist know of "shared dreaming."

Park's "This Man" is an important character who holds the key to Dae-ho's destiny, Go said.

"It is a very attractive character that freely moves between dreams and the real world. It was fun to work with him and I think he delivered the role in a charming way."

[NEWS] 170215 ‘Lucid Dream’ Director Kim Joon-sung, “Park Yoochun ‘This Man’ is needed, he did well in acting”

‘Lucid Dream’’s director, Director Kim Joon-sung, explained about Park Yuchun’s character role.
The movie ‘Lucid Dream’ (directed by Kim Joon-sung, produced by Road Pictures) held a press screening and its press conference at CGV Wangsimni in Haengdang-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul on the 15th. At the location, lead actors Go Soo and Sol Kyung-gu, and Kang Hye-jung participated; together with Director Kim Joon-sung.
In the film Park Yuchun undertook the part of ‘This Man’, a mysterious man who is discovered when he appeared in ‘Dae-ho’(Go Soo)’s dreams. He plays a role as the presence who instructs the shared-dreaming form of ‘Dae-ho’.

Director Kim Joon-sung, who undertook the directing of ‘Lucid Dream’, spoke about actor Park Yuchun: “‘This Man’ himself in the lucid dreams is a popular, interesting character for dream-maniacs,” and, “‘This Man’ is needed to explain lucid dreams and shared-dreaming. Park Yuchun did well serving as a medium. I think he’s good at disappearing and appearing (in the film)”.
The movie is a memory-trace SF thriller where Dae-ho (Go Soo) –a reporter who specializes in the corruption charges of large conglomerates– uses ‘lucid dreams’ to look for his son who was deliberately kidnapped 3 years prior, and chases after the criminal by finding clues inside hidden memories.
‘Lucid dreaming’ refers to whether you perceive the fact it is a dream in the midst of you having a dream, being aware of the fact it is a dream from the beginning, or when a person controls his/her dream while he/she is having a dream in the first place.
‘Lucid Dream’ will open this [February] 22nd.
