[HanCinema's Film Review] "Lucid Dream"

Dae-ho (played by Ko Soo) is a reporter with legal troubles who struggles to make time for family. Then, one day at the amusement park, Dae-ho loses something very precious to him and is haunted by nightmares, slowly being driven mad. That is, until he learns about neurology researcher So-hyeon (played by Kang Hye-jeong), who is working to unlock the power of the "Lucid Dream" to reconstruct in fuller detail the mysteries of the subconscious.

With such a cool concept it's a bit of a shame that the actual plot of "Lucid Dream" is just a standard investigative thriller. A good investigative thriller, admittedly, as writer/director Kim Joon-seong-I has just the bare minimum number of twists and turns to keep us guessing as to the ever elusive identity of the true antagonist. It was admittedly a little silly how dubious medical practices are more of a plot point than Dae-ho's backstory, which barely gets used even as a red herring.

But as to the good stuff, "Lucid Dream" looks great. The film's climactic setpiece is beautifully set among the crumbling black-and-white dreamscape of the Digital Media City in Seoul. The atmosphere is oddly fearful and unnerving, and well symbolizes the general collapse in psyche of the three persons who ultimately meet there. It's the ultimate spookiness- trapped inside a dying mind, feeling ever conscious of the destruction of self, the hopelessness of it all, the sheer desperation.

So yep, a nice metaphor. And it's actually quite well built up to throughout the story. If writer/director Kim Joon-seong-I doesn't seem to show much interest in the possibilities of the dream world, it's because Dae-ho doesn't care. Remember, Dae-ho only wants to go into dreams to resolve the nightmare of his daily reality. We can feel this tension in all of the dream sequences. There's always this sense that Dae-ho feels as out of control there as in the real world. Consequently, Dae-ho wants to escape dreams as badly as he wants to escape reality. In both locations his sense of self is intolerable.

The contrast is well marked with Yong-hyeon (played by Park Yoo-chun), a mysterious man of the dream world who seems to have all the answers yet Yong-hyeon's powers are illusory. He is master of the dream world precisely because he is powerless in the real one. If Yong-hyeon at times seems magical in scope, and a better hero than Dae-ho can ever hope to be, it's important to realize that Dae-ho, with his actual joyful real life talisman, very much does not want to become Yong-hyeon.

Of course as is often the case with metaphysical stories it's very easy to read an amount of depth into "Lucid Dream" that may well not actually exist. So to put this movie into simpler teams, the "Lucid Dream" concept? Cool. The story? Above average. Special effects. Excellent, and frequently subtle. The emotional kicker at the end? Actually pretty good considering what an archetypal character Dae-ho. So this is an easy recommendation for me.

Netflix Takes Enters into LUCID DREAM; 2nd Korean Acquisition for Online Streaming Giant

Current sci-fi thriller Lucid Dream has become only the second Korean film to enter into a distribution contract with online streaming giant Netflix. The film, which debuted in Korean theaters on February 23rd, will be exclusively offered in Netflix’s 190 global markets.

KO Soo leads the cast as a man crushed in the wake of his son’s disappearance. Three years later, he is led towards a new investigation technique called ‘lucid dreaming’ through which he hopes to find a clue to his son’s whereabouts.

Beyond KO, whose major credits include The Front Line (2011), Lucid Dream features veteran star SUL Kyung-gu of A Peppermint Candy (2000) and the Public Enemy series as well as K-pop star PARK Yoo-chun, who debuted on screen in the BONG Joon-ho-produced maritime thriller Haemoo (2014).

Lucid Dream is the featured length directorial debut of KIM Joon-sung, who built his reputation through well-received short films. He is currently working on the script for his next project Seoul, which will take place during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Jessica LEE, the Vice President of communications for Netflix Asia, stated that: “We are looking forward to Lucid Dream becoming a movie that’ll receive great love from audiences all around the world through Netflix.”

The news follows a similar deal for last year’s disaster drama Pandora. Both arrangements were secured by Contents Panda, the international arm of Korean studio Next Entertainment World. Lucid Dream debuted at seventh place at the Korean box office, with 27,000 entries on its opening day.

New Korean sci-fi thriller depicts father tracking down his missing boy in lucid dream

SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Yonhap) — Lucid dreaming is an elusive state in which you consciously know you are dreaming. Unlike a regular dream where there is no control over what you experience, a lucid dream offers you the possibility to control your surroundings.
The upcoming Korean sci-fi thriller “Lucid Dream” tells the story of a father who slips into his own dreams with help from a psychiatrist to locate his little boy kidnapped three years ago and find clues to track down his captor.
“The term ‘lucid dream’ may sound strange, but you may have experienced the phenomenon at least once without knowing,” rookie director Kim Joon-sung said during a news conference for the film at a CGV theater in southern Seoul.

As a filmmaker who has often flown through the sky in his lucid dreams since his early years, Kim said he has always wanted to make a film about the subject matter.
And the success of the 2010 Hollywood sci-fi film “Inception,” about a thief who steals corporate secrets through use of dream-sharing technology, convinced him to fulfill his dream — making a feature debut with a film about lucid dreaming.
During the press conference, the movie’s main cast all said they decided to be in the film mainly due to its “fresh” subject matter and intriguing screenplay.
“I enjoyed its lightweight feel, like reading a sci-fi novel, when I first checked the screenplay. But I got nervous and had sweaty hands after reading through it. So I told the director that I wanted in although I was not that good at acting,” actor Go Soo said.
He played Dae-ho, a newspaper reporter with a specialty in unearthing corruption involving large conglomerates, who strives to find the whereabouts of his boy who was abducted from an amusement park as a premeditated plot three years ago. He then happens to find an article about lucid dreaming in a newspaper and visits his friend and psychiatrist So-hyun (Kang Hye-jung) to go back to the day when he lost his son and find clues for tracking the kidnapper using the lucid dreaming technique.

Veteran actor Seol Kyung-gu took the role of Bang-seop, a police detective in charge of the kidnapping investigation that showed no progress in its third year. He decides to reinvestigate the case after Dae-ho tells him about the possibility of finding clues through lucid dreaming.
“I thought the idea of lucid dreaming was interesting. I might have chosen not to do this work if the director was an old man, but he is quite young. I was really curious how this idea would work,” Seol said.
Actress Kang agreed, saying, “When I first read the script the term ‘lucid dreaming’ was new and I was curious how this would be shown in a movie. After checking out many research materials, I realized that this was a phenomenon that people might have experienced at least once in their lives.”

Park Yu-chun, a member of the popular K-pop boy band JYJ, plays an unnamed mysterious man in a black suit who confuses Dae-ho by abruptly appearing in his lucid dreams and later in the real world.
The film was originally set to be out last fall but pushed back the schedule after the 30-year-old singer-actor was accused of sexual assault by four women in June.
Director Kim, however, denied allegations that the sex scandal was the main reason for the delay.
“It took longer than expected to complete the film because it has lots of computer graphics, which delayed the release,” he said. Park did not attend the news conference because he is currently serving his two years of mandatory military service.
Despite concerns that the scandal may mar the film’s image, the filmmaker cut out not a single scene with Park. “I didn’t because his is a character who provides the decisive clue in the story,” he explained.
The movie, presented and distributed by Next Entertainment World, is set to open in local theaters on Feb. 22. It is also scheduled to be unveiled in 190 countries around the world on the U.S. media streaming site Netflix.

[NEWS] 161128 Exclusive: Sol Kyung-gu X Go Soo ‘Lucid Dream’ opening change, ”Won’t be shown in January”

The opening date for movie ‘Lucid Dream’ starring Sol Kyung-gu X Go Soo has changed once again.
According to the film industry on the 28th, ‘Lucid Dream(by Director Kim Jun-seong)’ –which has confirmed an opening date of January 4th next year– is under discussion once again on the timing of its opening presently.
Related to this, a representative told Ilgan Sports: “‘Lucid Dream”s January opening seems unlikely in actuality. It is under reconsideration for an opening in the first half of the year,” and, “At present, March has the most potential and at latest, will be no later than April”.
According to representatives who are well-informed in the movie, ‘Lucid Dream’ has been opened to the possibility of change internally even after they had officially announced the opening of January 4th.
NEW –who is distributing ‘Lucid Dream’– had forgone Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Yoo-jung’s ‘Because I Love You”s November opening; and were under discussion on a January opening for it, along with ‘Lucid Dream’ and ‘The King’. It is rumored they ordered an opening in early January for ‘Because I Love You’, after serious consideration on placing the three works; and that they decided on coordinating ‘Lucid Dream”s opening once again.
Following this ‘Because I Love You’ is slated to open in early January and ‘The King’ on January 18th, if it were not for the unexpected change. ‘Lucid Dream’ is expected to be able to be seen in theaters come March~April.
‘Lucid Dream’ is a work depicting the story about how a father whose son was kidnapped begins to search for clues of the criminal, by receiving an assistant’s help in his dreams.

[NEWS] 160928 Sports Chosun Exclusive: “Park Yuchun not edited out” ‘Lucid Dream’ confirm opening for January 2017

‘Lucid Dream’ (Director: Kim Jun-seong, Production: Road Pictures) –the fantasy-thriller movie to which its release was indefinitely postponed with ‘Park Yuchun’s scandal’– decided on a release date of January 4th next year at the end of the long wait.
Recently [a] ‘Lucid Dream”s production crew [member] said via Sports Chosun, “There was a final decision that ‘Lucid Dream’, which was expected for a fall release this year, will be in the line-up of January next year”.
This production crew [member] explained, “Back when Park Yuchun faced a lawsuit on the suspicion of sexual assault the past June, ‘Lucid Dream’ production company and NEW had discussed a lot about setting the timing of its release. We were prepared for a fall release but were at a loss at the case that surfaced suddenly.
In particular, it is a non-editable situation where Park Yuchun is playing a hidden character who helps Go Soo[‘s character], the protagonist, in the film; and the production crew and NEW had to adjust for a release date, following to the direction arranged by his scandal case. Seeing such a timing, they decided on a release date of January 4, 2017”.
‘Lucid Dream’ –Park Yuchun’s last work before enlisting– placed its name in this year’s fall line-up after entering in its first shooting in April last year, having its crank-up in June that year, and going through post-production for 1 year.
After ordering the hit ‘Descendants of the Sun’, a KBS2 drama in the first half of the year, investor & distributor NEW gathered anticipations as much as in their fall line-up and in many ways.
However in June a situation, to which Park Yuchun’s case unraveled and indefinitely postponed the release date, happened. Internally, opinions saying ‘edit the amount of Park Yuchun to the maximum and let’s open’ were considerable but this also made for a tough situation. They were limited by an amount that can edit the movie’s storyline.
After being stuck in a predicament in many ways and having indefinitely postponed its fall release once, ‘Lucid Dream’ had to watch the flow of timing.
Meanwhile, because Park Yuchun got cleared of suspicions completely, ‘Lucid Dream’ was confirmed for a release date of January 4th next year after there was discussion over the timing of its release again. It is expected that the amount of Park Yuchun is included, unedited and intact.
On the other hand, ‘Lucid Dream’ is a fantasy-thriller that portrays a desperate struggle where a man, who lost his son 3 years prior, moves in and out between dreaming and reality while discovering clues through lucid dream[ing]. It stars Go Soo, Sol Kyung-gu, Kang Hye-jung, Park In-hwan, Chun Ho-jin, and Park Yuchun; and is Director Kim Jun-seong’s the first commercial movie and debut work. It will be released on January 4, 2017.
