In “Sea Fog” -- produced and co-written by internationally recognized Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho (“Snowpiercer,” “The Host”) -- Kang is disheartened to learn that the owner of the fishing boat he captains, the Junjin, intends to sell the vessel. With his crew in danger of losing their seafaring livelihoods, Kang pays a visit to Yeo, a human-trafficking broker, and decides to take on the dangerous but lucrative job of smuggling illegal migrants into South Korea. When the Junjin arrives at the pickup point, however, a violent storm forces the boat to stall in the open waters. As tension and unrest spread throughout the Junjin -- pitting Kang's unsympathetic crew against the desperate migrants -- a dense sea fog envelops the boat, and tragedy unfolds in its mysterious depths. Variety writes: “Turning a real-life human-trafficking tragedy into a comment on social inequality and the cost of survival, ‘Sea Fog’ dramatizes a stark nautical ordeal fraught with tension.”
